The Epic Journey

Bruce Jack Heritage Coombesville (Napa) Epic Journey Red Blend

Collaboration is the fabric of this wine project involving a passionate Napa grapegrower, Ed Schulz, and two fanatical winemakers, Marlize Beyers and Bruce Jack. Planning spans oceans, continents, decades and many late-night philosophical digressions.

Coombesville AVA

This is a wine made from the best, handpicked, top quality Coombesville fruit. But drama, intrigue, challenge, ambition, idealism, heartbreak and redemption so densely pack this winemaking journey as well. The result is a shared vision of elegance, complexity, balance and a new style of Napa red winemaking.

Tasting Notes:

The 2019 Epic Journey is a rich blend of Coombsville AVA Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. From the superstar 2019 vintage, a very deep and dark garnet with intense aromas of black cherry pie, mulberry and black pepper. In the mouth, fresh, ripe, black cherry, wild strawberries and dark chocolate with a juicy brightness thanks to fantastic acidity. The tannins are silky and fine-grained, harmoniously integrated with the perfumed aromas on the noses and palate, with a long and lingering finish.

Vintage Conditions

2019 was only slightly cooler than 2018. The area received a surprisingly heavy amount of rain in May (>70mm in some places), while the remainder of the spring and summer growing season was normal. Summer brought mild weather, with no heat spells and enough moisture in the soil to allow grapes to ripen optimally. October 23rd saw the start of the Kincaid Fire in Sonoma County, forcing our hand at picking. Overall the yields were slightly down from the previous vintage, resulting in more concentrated and powerful wines in 2019 with higher skin to juice ratios.
